Study of Extreme Environments

The study of this research theme aims to understand and describe the chemistry in some extreme environments such as hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, hypoxic and anoxic environments. In these environments, biogeochemical cycles of crucial elements, such as carbon and nitrogen, and their interactions with other substances and organisms are studied.

This study also includes methane and sulfides measurements and application of known and development of new biomarkers in order to highlight the biogeochemical cycling in the extreme environments and delineate life patterns and microbial-chemical interactions combining innovative in situ marine technology with state of the art analytical tools.
