LIFE LULUCF ATLAS

LIFE LULUCF ATLAS

LIFE LULUCF ATLAS will support the climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts of Greece and Bulgaria, to contribute to the EU’s 2050 climate neutrality objective, by improving governance in the land use, land use change and forestry sector (LULUCF), through the achievement of the following objectives to:
• enhance the monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) system for the national GHG reporting, in line with EU regulations 2018/841, 2018/1999 and 2023/839, to increase transparency, completeness and accuracy
• promote systematic monitoring of the land sector, bioclimatic variables and climate change impacts, to identify trends and improve projections
• support policymaking to sustain and increase net carbon removals, promoting synergies between policies and measures for climate mitigation, adaptation and biodiversity
• capacity-building and engagement of stakeholders and interested parties in the implementation of the European Green Deal
LIFE LULUCF ATLAS will strengthen the capacity of the two countries to develop geographically explicit GHG inventories for the LULUCF sector, as well as report carbon fluxes using robust emission and removal activity data and calculation factors. The project will also further advance national GHG reporting by investigating the inclusion of blue carbon in seagrass meadows and establishing links with carbon certification schemes.
Moreover, the climate change mitigation and adaptation potential of the LULUCF sector will be assessed, to plan relevant, country-specific policies and measures. Finally, LIFE LULUCF ATLAS will strengthen the link between climate mitigation and environmental protection by implementing ex-ante and ex-post evaluation tools to support policymaking. Institutional arrangements, transnational cooperation and synergies between policy areas fostered during LIFE LULUCF ATLAS will contribute to the sustainability and exploitation of its results.
