ARTEMIS

Accelerating the Restoration of Seagrass Meadows in the Mediterranean area through Innovative ecosystem-service based Solutions (ARTEMIS)

The ARTEMIS project aims to restore and conserve Mediterranean seagrass meadows by developing innovative restoration methods and integrating the value of ecosystem services into policy and financial frameworks. Running from January 2024 to June 2026, the project brings together multidisciplinary partners from five European countries to promote sustainable seagrass management through transnational cooperation.

ARTEMIS will implement four pilot restoration projects covering all stages of seagrass recovery, from restoring degraded areas to enhancing protected sites. It will develop and test Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) schemes, produce guidelines for scaling them, and establish a transnational policy observatory to embed seagrass ecosystem services into public and private decision-making. The project will also create technical tools for restoration, valuation, and communication of ecosystem services, while actively engaging local stakeholders through consultations, awareness campaigns, and international events.
