Aristomenis P. Karageorgis (AK; male) obtained his Diploma in Geology at the Athens Univ., and earned his PhD in Oceanography, at the Thessaloniki Univ.

He was a post-doc fellow at the Ecole des Mines de Paris, Sophia-Antipolis, France, and Fulbright fellow at Texas A&M University, USA. His main research activities are in particle dynamics, marine optics, sedimentology, and geochemistry.

He has more than 25 years of research experience through participation in over 60 national / international research programs, studies focused on sedimentology, geochemistry and marine optics.

He is a sea-going oceanographer and has spent more than 4 years at sea through participation in more than 150 oceanographic expeditions. He is author of 85 publications in peer-reviewed journals (Scopus: >1850 citations, h-index 25) and of more than 100 contributions to international conferences. 

He supervised several undergraduate diploma thesis, Ph.D. and Post-Doc students. He is the National Focal Point of Greece in the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) in UNESCO since 2010, member and deputy member to the General Assembly of the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation, National delegate (2019-2021) to the Horizon 2020 Programme Committee “Societal Challenge 2: Food Security, Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry, Marine and Maritime and Inland Water research, and the Bioeconomy” and National expert since 2021. From May 2019 to March 2020 he was appointed member of the General Assembly of the Horizon Europe Mission Board on Healthy Oceans, Seas, Coastal and Inland Waters, and since April 2020 he is full member of the Mission Group.

In December 2018 he was elected Director of the Institute of Oceanography. Currently he is the Vice-President of the Board of Directors of HCMR.
