LIFE+ AQUAPEF

According to the European Commission, the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) is a multi-criteria measure of the environmental performance of a good or service that considers its whole life cycle, i.e. from extraction of raw materials, through production and use, to final waste management. Guidance for PEF calculation has not yet been developed for one of the most important commercial products on a global scale; fishery products.

The LIFE+ AQUAPEF project aims to promote the production and distribution of sustainable fishery products in the Mediterranean aquaculture sector in accordance to the PEF initiative. Specifically, the project aims to develop appropriate tools to facilitate environmental and biological data availability, PEF calculation, verification, and B2B and B2C communication. The project takes into account stakeholders along the production chain (companies, consumers, administration) with the ultimate aim to identify strategies that enhance the production of sustainable fish-farm products and further, to demonstrate and replicate relevant improvements in seabass and seabream fish farms.
