Marine Analytical Laboratories

The Analytical Laboratories of the IO have been certified by the “Hellenic Accreditation System SA – ESYD”according to ELOT EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 (Certification No. 366) for the methodologies of the analysis of nutrients in seawater since 2007. During the period 2013-2017, the laboratory has been also certified for the methodologies of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in seawater and sediments (Certification No. 366-3). Moreover, the procedure for the certification of the laboratory for the methodologies of major elements and trace metals in sediments has been concluded.

As of 2016, the IO operates a fully equipped mobile laboratory aimed at upgrading coastal works and improving sample collection, whilst performing basic analytical biotic and abiotic measurements in situ. The mobile lab has been effectively used in fast response actions such as the recent (September 2017) oil spill accident in the Saronikos Gulf that impacted the coasts of Attica.

Physics

Instrument maintenance and management laboratory The instrument maintenance and management laboratory of the oceanic physics department is responsible for hosting, servicing and managing all equipment used for field deployments and operations. The main field equipment of the laboratory consists of (amongst others): SeaBird Electronics SBE911plus CTD unit + 24 & 12 Niskin bottles carousels. The

Chemical Labs

Chemistry

Chemical Labs The Chemical Laboratories of IO provide scientific analyses and services related to nutrients, organic chemistry and biogeochemistry, trace metals, marine litter, ocean acidification parameters, N, C, P, S, biogeochemical processes and dissolved gases: O2, H2S, greenhouse gasses – CO2, CH4. The Chemical Laboratories of IO are certified by the Hellenic Accreditation System SA

Biology Labs

Biology

The Biological Oceanography department is separated in four Laboratories: (i) Plankton Ecology(ii) Benthic Ecology(iii) Ecotoxicology(iv) Operational Ecology, and they are all equipped with state-of-the-art instruments and have excellent facilities that meet regularly updated scientific protocols.

Geology labs

Geology

LABORATORY OF GEOLOGY AND GEOPHYSICS SEDIMENTOLOGY LABORATORY This lab specializes in sediment sampling, sample preparation and performance of a series of physical and chemical analyses of sediments recovered from marine, estuarine and freshwater environments. A brief description of the main methods follows below: Separation of the finer (< 63 μm) sediment fraction by wet sieving.

Mobile Lab

Mobile Lab

From 2016, the Institute of Oceanography and especially the department of Marine Chemistry is operating a fully equipped mobile laboratory aiming at upgrading coastal works and improve the sample collection and analyze basic analytical biotic and abiotic measurements in-situ. The mobile lab has been effectively used in fast response actions such as the recent (September
