Dr Panagiotis Michalopoulos , Geochemist-Oceanographer, is a Senior Researcher in HCMR. He obtained a B.Sc. from the Geology Department, University of Athens, an M.Sc. in Sedimentology and its Applications at the Postgraduate Research Institute for Sedimentology, Reading University, U.K. He was awarded a fellowship by Hellenic Fellowship Foundation for graduate studies and obtained a Ph.D. in coastal oceanography at Stony Brook University, US. He has participated in many field campaigns including cruises in the Amazon, Mississippi, Danube deltaic systems and has worked on Congo deep sea fan and Mediterranean deep sea sediments. Main research interests are early diagenetic reactions and sediment-water interactions in marine depositional environments and contaminated sites with an emphasis on carbonate and aluminosilicate diagenetic mineral formation. Has conducted research on “reverse weathering reactions”, silica, carbon and major element biogeochemistry in Amazon, Mississippi and Danube deltas. He has participated in multiple international and national programs as principal investigator or co-investigator.
