Dr Margarita Iatrou is a marine geologist/oceanographer. She holds a Ph.D in Marine Geology and Sedimentology (2012) from University of Patras, an M.Sc in Oceanography (2001) from the University of Southampton, Southampton Oceanography Center (SOC), UK and a B.Sc in Geology (1999) from the University of Patras. Her PhD thesis involved the study of marine tailings disposal and the transportation processes from shelf to deep basin in the seismically active environment of Corinth Gulf.

From 2004 until 2016 she was a research associate of the Laboratory of Marine Geology and Physical Oceanography, of the University of Patras. She has more than 10 years of experience in national and international marine scientific projects. She has participated in numerus marine geophysical and geotechnical surveys in Greece (Avlida straits, Amvrakikos Gulf, Lake Pamvotis, Patraikos Gulf, Strofades island etc.) where she was involved in geophysical data acquisition and processing, sedimentological analysis of samples and project reporting. She has also participated in many marine geoarchaeological projects in Greece (ancient port of Lechaio, Cape Sounio, Kefalonia island, Killini, Modi islet in Poros, etc.) and abroad (Alexandria of Egypt, port of Byblos in Lebanon, Corsica, Mazotos in Cyprus, Stara Novalia in Croatia) where she worked in survey planning, data acquisition and processing and production of thematic maps in GIS environment. She has also participated in European projects (FP7 COLLABORATIVE Project HYPOX, Interreg project Greece – Italy 2007- 2013 APREH, LIFE Debag). She worked as a Postdoc researcher in FP7 EU-Project SASMAP "Development of Tools and Techniques to Survey, Assess, Stabilize, Monitor and Preserve Underwater Archaeological Sites”.

Since 2020 she is working as research associate at the Institute of Oceanography of HCMR. and has participated in several projects and research cruises aboard R/V AEGAEO, including DEEPRIFT, Eurofleets+ MYRTOON and HABITAT MAPPING. The full title of the latter is “Guidelines and Best Practices for marine Habitat mapping”. The role of Dr Iatrou in this project was to assemble and evaluate methodologies and techniques commonly used for marine habitat mapping and she has been the key person for the compilation of a guide entitled “Guidelines and Best Practices for marine habitat mapping” adapted to the special marine environment of the Hellenic Seas.

Her publication record in peer reviewed scientific journals and special publications is 14 papers (h Index 7).
