Elli Pitta is a technical scientist under contract at the Institute of Oceanography since 2014.

Her research focuses on the estimation of Dissolved Organic Carbon, DOC, in natural waters and the qualitative analysis of DOC through the investigation of Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) and Fluorophoric Dissolved Organic Matter (FDOM). CDOM is being studied through absorption spectroscopy while FDOM is investigated through 3D fluorescence spectroscopy coupled with chemometric analysis Parallel Factor Analysis, PARAFAC. The investigation of CDOM and FDOM can give insights regarding the origin, nature and transformation state of dissolved organic matter present in natural waters.
