Position: PhD Candidate
Expertise: Biologist

Premises: athens
Dr Danae Patsiou is a research fellow working on Plastic Busters MPAs Interreg Med project at Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR). Danae is focused on the assessment of the environmental impacts of microplastics on the marine protected area of Zakynthos island, East Ionian Sea, and the investigation of physiological parameters of various native Mediterranean species, bioindicators for marine litter, with distinctly different habitats, to attribute the animal health directly to the presence of MPs in the animal, and evaluate the environmental effect of MPs in the Mediterranean Sea. She has a strong interest in particle toxicology, gene expression, DNA damage and biomarker analysis in aquatic species, such as striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus and Mediterranean mussel Mytillus galloprovincialis. Previously, Danae received her bachelor’s at Biology department of University of Patras where she did her research on the effects of temperature on morphological and sexual development of zebrafish (Danio rerio). She then received her master’s at University of Portsmouth focusing on ecotoxicology and effects of environmental organic pollutants on three-spined stickleback larva behavior. Danae conducted her PhD research at Heriot Watt University under the supervision of Prof. Ted Henry and Prof. Teresa Fernades that was funded by FutureNanoNeed EU FP7. Her research focused on nanoparticle physicochemical properties and how nanoparticle aqueous exposure can affect biomarker gene expression in zebrafish larvae and adults.
