Position: Functional Scientific personnel
Expertise: Physicist Oceanographer
Department: Ocean Physics
Premises: athens
Dr. Eng. Aristides Prospathopoulos is a Principal Research Staff Scientist of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), Institute of Oceanography, where he works for over 25 years. He possesses a diploma from the School of Mechanical Engineering, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece, and a PhD title on underwater acoustic propagation modelling from the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of the same institution.
His current scientific topics of interest are: study of underwater soundscape; underwater noise and effects on marine life as well as relevant policy recommendations and measures; shipping noise modelling; acoustic propagation models in ocean waveguides. He is the HCMR and national responsible regarding the monitoring and assessment for the Descriptor 11 (underwater noise) of Good Environmental Status (GES) related to Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), for the implementation cycles 2018-2023 and 2024-2029. In this framework, he has established collaboration with the Hellenic Navy and HEREMA (Hellenic Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company) for enhancing marine life protection.
From 2018, he is the national representative (assigned by the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy) and active member of the MSFD Technical Group for underwater noise (TG Noise), established by EU for providing guidance to the Member States. He is a member of TG Noise Working SubGroup on Modelling for delivering a guidance report on continuous noise modelling for the EU Member States. He also serves as the national representative for underwater noise in the JPI oceans working group. From 2021, he is the founder and coordinator of the first inter-institutional HCMR team LITTUS (Listen To The Underwater Soundscape) for the study of the underwater soundscape and noise and the effects of the latter on the marine life of the Greek marine and inland waters. He has a leading/main role in several national and European projects related to underwater noise and bioacoustics, as well as EIA studies regarding seismic surveys, FSRU and FSRP installations, etc. He has more than 30 peer-reviewed publications in international journals and conferences and more than 500 citations (Scopus).
He is an editor in Oceanography and Fisheries Open Access Journal and guest co-editor of the Special Issue "Assessing the Pressure of Underwater Anthropogenic Noise from Impulsive and Continuous Sound Sources" in the MDPI Journal of Marine Science and Engineering (JMSE), and he has served as a reviewer of several high-level scientific journals and conferences, as well as of proposals of a European platform call.
Until now, he has served as an instructor of a master-level academic course for six years, asupervisor of three master theses and a member of the advisory committee of one master thesis. He is an elected member of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Oceanography of HCMR (2025-2027) and the elected General Secretary of the Hellenic Association of Staff Research Scientists (June 2024 - June 2027).
