YANNIS HATZONIKOLAKIS
Position: Technical Scientist Under Contract
Expertise: Physicist
Department:
Premises: athens
Yannis holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physics (University of Patras, 2007-2013), and an MSc in Oceanography and Management of Marine Environment (University of Athens, 2014-2016). For his master’s thesis he developed and implemented a model that based on Dynamic Energy Budget theory, simulates the life cycle (i.e., birth, growth, maturation, reproduction) of the Mediterranean mussel, with respect to environmental variability. Yannis is currently a PhD student (2019- ), hosted also at the Department of Biology at University of Athens, with his thesis focusing on the impact of microplastics on marine organisms from different levels of the food chain, including commercially important species. As a member of HCMR modelling group he is working on marine litter distribution models with emphasis on identifying ecosystem services under threat from plastic pollution in Mediterranean Sea. In addition, his research interests include the development of fish bioenergetics models.
